The end of the year is approaching and your child’s results are not up to par… What if you put him in boarding school? These structures welcome students from primary to baccalaureate, often experiencing academic failure. They provide them with a framework, support and support enabling them not to drop out. “The penal colony is over. Today, the boarding school advocates development through sports infrastructure, cultural activities and outings,” explains Thomas Jallaud, director of the Fabert centers, which help with orientation and training.
At this time of year, there is still time to join a boarding school, by submitting your application to the establishment of your choice. In the majority of structures, however, registrations are closed as soon as numbers are reached.
What are the advantages ?
“It is no longer a punishment but a solution, and very often a blessing for the children,” explains Marc Assous, creator of the Internat lounge, with enthusiasm. This type of structure provides a framework and rigor. Its aim is to ensure academic and educational success. There are rules to follow and sanctions applied in the event of violations. The day is rhythmic, waking up, studying, eating or going to bed at set times. In themajority of structures, telephones must be turned off in the evening.
What if my child objects?
His agreement is essential. Boarding school must be a solution and not a punishment. The famous “if you don’t work you will go there”, causing fear and apprehension, no longer has reason to exist. “No student is accepted if they don’t want to be. Otherwise, there is a counterproductive phenomenon, he does one more stupid thing, refuses to work and gets excluded very quickly,” specifies Thomas Jallaud. It must be a family decision, taken by the parents but especially by the child.
Good students can go there
If the boarding school is in the majority of cases aimed at students who do not have optimal conditions for academic success, “it is not only students in difficulty who turn to these establishments, some welcome students with a good level to lead them towards excellence,” specifies Marc Assous.
Don’t feel guilty
Obviously, leaving the family home before having finished your adolescence is not always easy. “Certain family situations prevent good supervision, parents lack time to supervise evening homework, it is an alternative to prevent the child from completely dropping out of school,” notes Thomas Jallaud.
Boarding school can be a second chance. This is the feeling of Louis, who will pass the certificate at the end of the month and joined a boarding school in Toulouse in September: “The separation from my parents was complicated, it took me a little time to adapt. Now, I don’t regret my choice at all, I’m super fulflled and my grades have jumped from an average of 5/20 to almost 15/20,” he confides.
Back to home
In the majority of cases, the child can leave the boarding school on Friday evening. But establishments look after young people on weekends and set up activities and outings. Very often, when the child goes to school in another region, it is easier to return only for school holidays.
According to the National Education “directory of boarding schools”, there are 4,000 public or private establishments of this type. All that remains is to choose! But how to find your way?
The most important thing is to choose a boarding school based on your beliefs and interests: it becomes your new home, you must feel good there! Before validating your registration, it is important to visit the premises. Educational projects differ depending on the structure. There are religious boarding schools, which organize prayers, readings and celebrations. Some establishments are mixed, others separate girls and boys. Others offer the possibility of following an education combining sport and schooling, without one of the areas harming the other. Finally, some choose their boarding school based on the options offered, whether languages, extra-curricular activities or outings.
